Things to avoid at all costs

• Boasting about your achievements.

• Telling the admissions tutor why he/she should offer you a place.

• Quotes from famous engineers, scientists or philosophers.

• Listing your examination results or predicted grades (these appear elsewhere on the UCAS form).

• Adapting or copying personal statements that you have found on the internet or in books (including this one!).

• Spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.

First impressions

Engineers tend to be practical people who can convey complicated information in ways that are easy to understand. They are problem-solvers who can get to the heart of an issue, discarding information that is not relevant to the issue they are dealing with. They understand the importance of turning ideas into solutions that have a benefit to others. Bear this in mind when writing the personal statement. Make the statement easy to read by using simple sentences, adding spaces between paragraphs, and sticking to the point. Give it a coherent structure and a logical flow. Remove anything that does not have a practical use. Treat the statement as you would an engineering project. Its purpose is to get you the offer at your chosen university.
